My experience becoming the primary caregiver for our children

When I was nearing 40, with two children aged 2 and 5 years old, I felt the need to start prioritizing. Having spent more than ten years in a marketing office, working more than ten hours a day, my routine involved coming home in the evening too tired to play with my children. I felt time passing too quickly, and I was missing a lot. My wife had always been dedicated to the family, sacrificing her professional life. In our case, both maternal and paternal grandparents were too far, and babysitters cost more than half a salary.

The MenCare Georgia campaign, which won first place in Emerging Europe’s 2018 Equality-Friendly Initiative of the Year contest, was invited to present at the Frankfurt International Book Fair, where Georgia was recognized as the Guest of Honor this year.

This interview with Ronald Digalo, a father of two, was conducted by Gustavo Benítez of Asociación Igualdad, a MenCare partner in Paraguay. Asociación Igualdad is a nongovernmental organization founded in 2006. One of its goals, through its Soy Papá (“I’m A Dad”) campaign started in 2016, is to promote responsible fatherhood, including through advancing men’s caregiving; promoting equal sharing of domestic duties; and preventing violence against children, teenagers, and women.  

Working dads need help taking parental leave

Men today have a problem. Many of us want to be fully engaged parents. And many of us believe in gender equality, at home and in the workplace. But when we start families, we struggle turning thought into action. Globally, a dramatic disparity still exists between the amount of care work done by men compared to women: in fact, women do more than twice as much care work as men do in every region of the world. In some regions, it’s more than six times as much.
